BAHASA DAN DIALEK TELUK PIRU, PULAU SERAM:
TERANCAM PUNAH DAN TERNYATA PUNAH

James T. Collins
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia

Abstract: The article describes the Luhu and Kaiboho languages, two languages in Teluk Piru, from the phonological and morphological aspects. The reserach was conducted in the framework of the conservation of languages considered to be in danger of extinction. Phonologically, bothe the Luhu and Kaiboho languages had five vowel phonemes with the difference in the presence of a long vowel. Both languages had 17 consonants and 2 half consosnants. The shorttening of words in both languages resulted in consonant clusters so that many words ended in consonants not vowels. Word shortening is included in the morphophonological process because this process involves sound change (phonology) related to reduplication, afixation and compounding (morphology). In addition, morphological system in the two languages indicated verbal changes to signify personae and the number of doers. Verb inflections caused sound change in the base words to distinguish agency.
